This is a tremendous blue stretch glass candleholder made by Northwood Glass in the #657 six-sided form, circa early to mid 1920s.
{Photos taken indoors without flash.}
Very Brief Background on Northwood & Dugan.
Thomas Dugan and his cousin, Harry C. Northwood, started out in the 1880s as employees at the Hobbs-Brockunier Glass firm in Wheeling, West Virginia. Eventually, Harry would form the
Northwood Glass Company
of Wheeling, West Virginia and Thomas would form the
Dugan Glass Company of Indiana, Pennsylvania
. Both companies were kingpins of the carnival and opalescent glass market in the early 1900's. Both Northwood and Dugan-Diamond Glass shut down in the mid-1920s.
Condition.
This antique candle is in
excellent condition
with no cracks or chips or repairs. The stretch iridescence is shimmering and second to none.
There are, of course, the usual straw marks ("shearing and crimping tool marks") and internal air bubbles from manufacturing commonly associated with the making of old EAPG, stretch, carnival, and opalescent glass.
The hand making and finishing of old glass assures that no two pieces are identical, each piece is truly unique.
... A nice find!
... Would look great alongside any Northwood, Dugan, Jefferson, Millersburg, Fenton, Westmoreland, Sowerby, Brockwitz, Riihimaki, Imperial, or other antique glass from the makers of fine opalescent, stretch, carnival glass, and EAPG.
